The Lehigh River located in the central part of eastern PA is an important tributary of the Delaware River. The Native American village at the junction of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers was called Lechauwekink, meaning "where there are forks". The Germans called the stream Lecha and the English changed it to Lehigh.
